The Global Event for Biotechnology

GERMANY: Pharmaceuticals Initiative launched

The problem these mainly small biotech companies face is the long and expensive road from the laboratory to the chemist's shop. Many companies do not have the capital they need to fund their work until they have a marketable product.
In order to help them out, the German Government has launched the "Pharmaceuticals Initiative for Germany ". More than 800 million euros will be available up to 2011. The money will be used to fund pure research and application-oriented promotional schemes in health research and biotechnology.
Small and medium-sized biotechnology enterprises will receive funding, as will clinical studies. One particular focus is on new concepts involving co-operations between research and industry. The "BioChance" promotional scheme has created incentives for that. (www.bundesregierung.de)
